A bar with history, in the past Mrs. Sara Braun´s dining room.
Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer and one of the main characters of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Our bar is named in honor of the journey made in 1916 by this expeditionary.
Ernest Shackleton
In August of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton departed aboard the Endurance heading to the South Atlantic, with the purpose of performing the first Trans-Antartic expedition on foot. The January 18th of 1915, the Endurance became trapped in the ice.
In April 1916, over a year later, Shackleton and five other men departed on a small boat, seeking for help.
After overcoming the stormy Drake Passage, in late August, Shackleton managed to get his crew rescued by the steam tugboat Yelcho of the Chilean Navy, commanded by the pilot Luis Pardo , with whom they returned triumphantly to Punta Arenas on September 3, 1916.
Shackleton’s bravery, leadership and his unforgettable adventure and the fact that he was especial guest of Sara Braun in her mansion, inspired the environment of our bar, decorated with a collection of watercolor paintings that remind us of Shackleton´s odyssey in this land.
With its elegant decoration and European-style, Hotel José Nogueira and Bar Shackleton creates an atmosphere of unparalleled romance.
Travel back in time and enjoy your favorite drink at the most historic bar in town, where we offer you a great selection of cocktails, menu to sharing and semi traditional sandwhiches, apart from our cellar that counts with a large variety of national wineries and a meticulous recreation of the original whisky, taken to Antarctica by #Shackleton in one of his expeditions between 1907 and 1909, found 100 years later.
